Universal Confirms International Rollout of Alex Gibney's Elon Musk Documentary

Universal Pictures is set to move forward with the international distribution of Alex Gibney's documentary "Musk," sources familiar with the project told Variety. The film, which runs close to four hours, will open in North American theaters on Oct. 9 through indie distributor Bleecker Street, though a specific overseas release date has not been announced, a common practice for a project of this scope.

"Musk" is scheduled to stream on HBO in the first quarter of 2027, the sources added.

Elon Musk, who has publicly criticized the documentary on his social platform X, described it as a "hit piece" and claimed the filmmaker assembled a list of detractors. The film includes an interview with Ashley St. Clair, a political influencer who previously had a child with Musk, and depicts a text exchange between them concerning the 2024 presidential election.

Musk's attorney, Alex Spiro, warned of a potential defamation lawsuit ahead of the October release, citing the text messages with St. Clair as a point of contention.
