Bills debut new Highmark Stadium with 41-31 win over Lions

Buffalo inaugurated its new Highmark Stadium on Thursday night with a 41-31 win against the Detroit Lions. Quarterback Josh Allen accounted for five touchdowns – three through the air and two on the ground – and finished with 317 total yards, extending his season total to nine touchdowns without a turnover. Defensive end Greg Rousseau added two sacks and forced a fumble, continuing a strong start to the season.

The Bills’ offense also benefited from contributions by wide receiver Joshua Palmer, who caught a 43-yard touchdown on his first snap, and running back James Cook, who rushed for 135 yards and averaged 6.4 yards per carry. Tight end Dalton Kincaid led the team in receptions with seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.

Detroit’s offense was led by quarterback Jared Goff, who threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns, and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who recorded nine catches for 142 yards and two scores. However, the Lions’ defense, hampered by injuries to key players including safety Avonte Maddox and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s secondary, allowed 448 total yards and seven touchdowns.

The game marked the first regular-season contest in the new stadium, which features updated amenities and a roof covering much of the seating area. The Bills’ coaching staff, including rookie head coach Joe Brady, made early strategic decisions such as activating the team’s offense after a coin toss and adjusting the defensive line roster following a pre-game injury to Ed Oliver.

"We’re excited to open our new home in front of our fans and start the season with a win," a Bills spokesperson said.

The loss leaves the Lions at 1-1 on the season, while Buffalo improves to 2-0.
