Google Introduces Home MCP to Link AI Agents with Smart-Home Devices

Summary

Google has launched Home MCP, a service that lets third-party AI models control and query Google Home devices for subscribed users in the United States, expanding the ecosystem for smart-home automation.

Google announced Home MCP, a new feature that enables third-party AI agents such as Claude, Codex, Antigravity, Hermes and OpenClaw to interact with the Google Home ecosystem and connected devices. The service is currently available only to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the United States.

Google says MCP "gives your favorite AI agent real-world physical context—allowing it to analyze and answer questions about home activity, summarize camera footage across rooms, manage devices on your behalf, or even create your own smart home dashboards using everyday language." The company has previously rolled out Gemini for Home to simplify automation and now aims to broaden DIY integration.

The rollout follows a series of updates across Google’s hardware and software portfolio, including the Android 17 QPR1 update for Pixel phones, the September 2026 update for Pixel Watch models, and new features in the Google Home app such as a battery-efficient widget and reduced device tile clutter. Google also reported a recent security fix for a targeted, zero-click modem exploit affecting Pixel phones.

Industry observers note that Home MCP represents an early step toward unifying the fragmented smart-home market, though its limited subscriber base and US-only availability may constrain immediate impact.
