F-16 fighter jet crashes in northern Michigan during training mission
A Texas Air National Guard F-16 crashed in a field south of Traverse City on Sept. 17; the pilot ejected safely and is in stable condition, while authorities investigate the cause.
An F-16 Fighting Falcon from the Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Wing crashed in a field near Blair Township, south of Traverse City, on Thursday, Sept. 17. The aircraft was on a routine training mission from the Combat Readiness Training Center in Alpena as part of Operation Northern Cactus.
The pilot successfully ejected and was transported to Munson Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition, according to state Rep. John Roth. Michigan State Police confirmed the pilot’s condition and said no civilians were injured and no homes were damaged.
The Texas Military Department’s Public Affairs Office said the incident is under investigation. Grand Traverse County officials ordered an evacuation of residents and businesses within a one-mile radius due to a reported chemical spill, and a shelter was opened at Kensington Church on Secor Road.
Local witnesses reported a loud explosion and a plume of black smoke. Blair Township Supervisor Nicole Blonshine said the pilot was found conscious and alert after parachuting from the aircraft. Police on the scene warned onlookers that the plane contained munitions and instructed them to stay clear of the crash site.
