Trump faces setbacks as courts, Congress and the Fed push back on his agenda

摘要

President Donald Trump encountered a series of defeats this week, including a Supreme Court ruling on mail-in voting, a lower-court decision on the Kennedy Center, a House vote on the Iran war, and a Federal Reserve rate hike, prompting public criticism on his social media platform.

President Donald Trump experienced multiple setbacks this week as several institutions moved contrary to his policy goals. The Supreme Court blocked his effort to limit mail-in voting ahead of the midterm elections, a decision he criticized on Truth Social. A federal district court also denied his proposal to renovate the Kennedy Center, a project he has said he may close.

The GOP-controlled House voted to require an end to the United States' conflict with Iran, adding three more Republican members to the list of dissenters. Meanwhile, a $5,000 cash payment proposal for every American if Republicans win the November elections appears to have lost support among congressional Republicans, and Speaker Mike Johnson sent lawmakers home early to avoid a vote on a potential impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve, led by Chair Kevin Warsh, raised its benchmark interest rate to a range of 3.75%-4%, the first increase since July 2023. Trump responded on Truth Social, arguing that the economy is strong and that rates should remain at 1%.

Internationally, Canada announced it is seeking associate membership in the European Union, a move that follows recent U.S. trade tensions. Trump warned that heavy tariffs could be imposed on Europe if the move is deemed hostile.

In the Middle East, Houthi rebels captured territory near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, raising concerns about oil-shipping routes as the United States continues operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

Republican Representative Zach Nunn of Iowa told CNN that members of the party will support the president on issues where they agree but will challenge him on matters such as tariffs and the Iran conflict. The series of setbacks comes as Trump’s approval rating remains in the low-30 percent range and as the 2024 midterm elections approach.
