House passes war powers resolution limiting Trump’s Iran operation

Resumen

Seven Republicans joined Democrats to approve a resolution that would end the president’s authority to continue U.S. military action in Iran after the 60-day limit, while 203 Republicans opposed the measure.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending President Donald Trump’s military operation in Iran after the statutory 60-day limit for presidential engagements without congressional approval. The measure, introduced by Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., received the votes of all 213 Democrats and seven House Republicans, passing 220-204.

Republicans who supported the resolution, including Reps. Tom Barrett, R-Mich., Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, and Thomas Massie, R-Ky., argued that Congress, not the White House, should decide on the deployment of U.S. forces.

"It’s up to Congress to prevent another endless American war," Barrett said.

Opponents, comprising 203 Republicans and independent Rep. Kevin Kiley, I-Calif., contended that the president is acting within his constitutional authority as commander in chief.

"The president has done a good job managing all this," Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., said, adding that the administration is protecting U.S. and Iranian interests.

The resolution references the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which permits a president to engage in hostilities for up to 60 days, followed by a 30-day withdrawal period, unless Congress authorizes further action. Supporters claim that the timeframe for the Iran operation has already expired. The Senate passed a similar measure in June, also with some Republican defections.
