Amazon's Anthropic Stake Could Be Worth Around $394 Billion if IPO Valued at $2 Trillion
Analysts estimate Amazon holds roughly a 20% stake in Anthropic, which could be valued at about $394 billion if the startup proceeds with a $2 trillion initial public offering.
Amazon has become a major investor in Anthropic, the artificial-intelligence startup behind the Claude model. The partnership began in September 2023 when Amazon Web Services committed $1.25 billion as part of a broader $4 billion deal, and it was completed with a further $2.75 billion in March 2024. In November 2024 Amazon added another $4 billion, bringing its total investment to roughly $5 billion, with the option to invest an additional $20 billion contingent on performance milestones.
Anthropic has filed a confidential S-1 and is rumored to target a $2 trillion valuation for its IPO as early as October. The company reported an annualized revenue run rate of $47 billion in May, rising to $65 billion in July. If the IPO proceeds at the projected valuation, Amazon's estimated 19.7% ownership would be worth about $394 billion, according to filings that list Amazon's Anthropic position at $190.4 billion.
The potential increase represents a multiple of roughly 30 times Amazon's original investment, though the gain would be reflected as a re-pricing of the existing carrying value rather than entirely new unrealized profit. Analysts note that the stake accounts for roughly 14% of Amazon's current market capitalization of $2.8 trillion, implying that a modest $10,000 investment in Amazon could see an additional $740 of value attributed to the Anthropic holding if the IPO valuation is realized.
Investors are watching the situation closely, as the outcome could affect Amazon's overall valuation and the perceived value of its cloud-computing services tied to Anthropic's AI workloads.
