Week 1 NFL analysis highlights defensive gains for Bengals and 49ers, and offensive sparks for Ravens and Bills

सारांश

The Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers showed notable defensive improvements, while the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills displayed promising offensive performances in Week 1.

The Cincinnati Bengals' defense appeared markedly stronger in its season opener, limiting big plays, generating turnovers and pressuring the quarterback after an initial adjustment from man to zone coverage. The revamped defensive line, featuring Dexter Lawrence, Boye Mafe and Jonathan Allen, dominated the Buccaneers' offensive line, and the secondary showed solid communication in zone schemes. Although the rush defense is not expected to shut down the run entirely, the unit avoided giving up explosive runs, a stark contrast to its 31st-ranked performance last season.

The Baltimore Ravens' offense impressed against the Indianapolis Colts, with quarterback Lamar Jackson taking snaps under center on 41 percent of plays, the highest rate of his career. Offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford's adjustments improved pass protection and created effective cutback lanes for the running game. Jackson and wide receiver Zay Flowers displayed strong chemistry, highlighted by a touchdown on a coordinated play-action sequence. Injuries to Flowers and rookie tight end Ja’Kobi Lane could test the scheme's depth in upcoming games.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen delivered a career-best performance against the Houston Texans, benefitting from a play-action-heavy game plan that featured 40 percent of drop backs as play actions. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady's protection scheme used chips, fake chips and pulling guards to neutralize the Texans' edge rush, allowing Allen to average 13.68 air yards per attempt, the highest against Houston in two years. The Bills relied on tight end Dalton Kincaid and receiver D.J. Moore to provide reliable targets.

San Francisco's 49ers defense showed a modernized look, employing a mix of two-high coverages on more than half of drop backs and occasional dime packages. The scheme helped generate the fourth-best defensive EPA per drop back in Week 1 and produced an interception against the Los Angeles Rams when the defense shifted from man to cover-2. While the unit remains vulnerable against the run due to limited interior line depth, the new approach could create opportunities if the offense forces opponents into passing situations.

"We want to break the 2013 Denver Broncos scoring record," Bears head coach Ben Johnson told The Athletic, referencing the team's 59-point opening win.

Other notes included a challenging debut for Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, whose unit struggled with negative rushing yards and interior line protection, suggesting early concerns for the team's offensive development.
