Researchers begin environmental testing in Ladera Ranch after cluster of rare childhood cancer

Scientists from Cal State Fullerton and USC started sampling parks in Ladera Ranch, Orange County, to investigate a possible environmental link to six recent cases of Ewing sarcoma, a rare bone and soft-tissue cancer.

Environmental testing commenced Sunday in the Ladera Ranch community of Orange County after six residents were diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare bone and soft-tissue cancer that primarily affects children and adolescents. Cal State Fullerton chemistry professor Daniel Curtis said the effort aims to determine whether any local environmental factor could be contributing to the cases, noting that establishing causation is challenging.

Curtis told NBC 4, "It's very difficult to prove causation, and we don't even know that this is environmental. It could be something else that's potentially causing childhood cancers, but what we want to do is figure out if there is something in the environment. We can figure out if it's here." Researchers expect preliminary results by the end of the week.

The testing follows community concerns about pesticide applications by the homeowners association, which were raised at a recent maintenance corporation meeting where several residents, including a mother who lost her son to the disease, voiced opposition. While a 2024 county-level review found no unusual pattern, residents called for a more focused assessment.

Ewing sarcoma accounts for about 1% of childhood cancers, with roughly 225 diagnoses nationwide each year, according to Johns Hopkins. In the surrounding area, nine to twelve cases of Ewing and synovial sarcoma have been reported, resulting in six deaths, including a 23-year-old woman and a 17-year-old man earlier this year. Researchers from the University of Southern California have also agreed to conduct parallel investigations.
