Choose topics, not just categories

"Technology" or "Science" tells you very little about what you actually want to read. Topics fix that.

What changed

Until now you could choose among eleven broad categories. That was enough to avoid sports if you hated sports, but not enough to say that you care about space missions and not about gadget reviews, or about software and not about hardware.

Topics are narrower. Each event is now tagged with the specific topics it touches, such as Space or Software, and you can choose the ones you want. Similar topics are merged, so you do not have to pick the same thing under three slightly different names.

How it shapes your feed

Topics sit alongside the people, companies and places you already follow. The For You feed and your alerts both use them, so the stories that reach you are closer to what you meant by "my interests". New topics appear as new kinds of events show up, so the list keeps up with the news.

How to try it

Go to your interests on the web, or in the iOS and Android apps, and search or browse for topics to add. You can remove any of them whenever you like. The web version arrived first, with the apps following on July 12 in version 1.6.4.

What stays the same

Categories are still there as a wide frame. Topics simply give you a finer pick inside it.
