President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum to deploy the National Guard and federal law enforcement agencies to Memphis, Tennessee, aiming to combat crime in the city. The initiative, announced on Monday, will establish the "Memphis Safe Task Force," modeled after similar efforts in Washington, D.C.
"This task force will be a replica of our extraordinarily successful efforts here," Trump stated during the announcement.
The task force will include personnel from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Marshals Service. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, present at the signing, expressed support for the deployment, emphasizing the need to address crime in Memphis.
"I'm tired of crime holding the great city of Memphis back," Governor Lee remarked.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young acknowledged the federal initiative but noted that he had not requested the National Guard's presence. He emphasized the importance of collaboration to ensure the deployment benefits the community.
"I did not ask for the National Guard, and I don't think it's the way to drive down crime," Mayor Young stated.
The deployment marks the third instance of National Guard troops being sent to U.S. cities under President Trump's administration, following similar actions in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. The President indicated that Chicago might be the next city to receive federal intervention.
"We're going to be doing Chicago probably next," Trump said, adding that the administration aims to "save" cities like St. Louis and Chicago.
While some local leaders have expressed reservations about the deployment, the administration maintains that the initiative is necessary to address crime rates in Memphis and potentially other cities in the future.
