President Trump Announces National Guard Deployment to Memphis to Address Crime
President Donald Trump has announced plans to deploy the National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee, aiming to address crime in the city.
President Donald Trump announced plans on Friday to deploy the National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee, in an effort to address crime in the city.
"We're going to Memphis," Trump stated during a Fox News interview, describing the city as "deeply troubled." He indicated that both Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Memphis Mayor Paul Young support the initiative.
The president's decision follows a similar deployment in Washington, D.C., last month. Trump expressed confidence in the approach, stating, "We're going to fix that, just like we did Washington."
Trump mentioned that the idea to prioritize Memphis was influenced by Jim Vena, CEO of Union Pacific Railroad and former board member at FedEx, which is headquartered in Memphis. According to Trump, Vena highlighted safety concerns in the city, noting the need for "an armored vehicle with bulletproof glass" to travel a short distance.
The president also indicated that other cities, including St. Louis and Chicago, are under consideration for similar interventions. Previous plans to deploy troops to Chicago faced opposition from local officials.
Legal challenges have arisen regarding such deployments. Washington, D.C., recently filed a lawsuit against the administration, alleging that the president exceeded his constitutional authority. Additionally, a federal judge blocked the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles.
During the interview, Trump criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom and expressed confidence in prevailing in the legal disputes, stating, "We think we're going to win all of them. And we have been winning all of them."
