Vance Blames Iran Conflict for Republican Loss, Trump Defends Decision

Vice President JD Vance said the war with Iran was the primary reason Republicans lost congressional seats, while President Donald Trump maintained his stance on the operation.

Vice President JD Vance attributed the Republican defeat in recent congressional elections to the United States' war with Iran, saying the conflict was the main factor voters cited. He posted on X on Wednesday, noting that pollsters told him the party's economic messaging was weak and that many voters who supported the ticket in 2024 switched to Democrats in 2026.

"The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026," Vance said.

Vance added that anger over the Iran war, rising living costs, inflation, and U.S. aid to Israel contributed to the loss, and he called for Republicans to refocus on policy goals. He also suggested that any honest discussion about the party's future must begin with acknowledging the war's impact.

"One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn't sharp enough down the stretch. I'm sure that's true," Vance said.

President Donald Trump, speaking to Fox News after the election results, defended the decision to launch the attacks, stating he would not have acted differently and that public support existed despite short-term fuel price increases.

"People agree with what I'm doing on Iran, but they really probably weren't willing to do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline," Trump said.

Following Vance's comments, global oil benchmarks fell more than 8%, with Brent crude dropping to about $95 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate to around $88, marking their lowest levels in over two months as markets reassessed the risk of broader Middle East conflict.
