Reddit reports sharp Google traffic drop and plans login-only experience

Reddit said its search referral traffic fell sharply after Google introduced AI-generated search answers, a shift that coincided with a 30% drop in Reddit’s share price and a dip in Alphabet’s market value. The company attributed the loss to users being directed to Google’s AI Overviews instead of Reddit pages. Earlier, Reddit announced it will move most users to a logged-in-only interface, beginning tests in select non-U.

S. markets in the fourth quarter, to protect data from AI scraping and improve ad targeting as search referrals decline.
