Lions adapt to injuries in Week 8 victory over Vikings

Resumen

Detroit overcame multiple injuries on defense and key offensive adjustments to beat Minnesota 5-2, improving depth chart clarity.

Detroit improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the NFC North after defeating the Minnesota Vikings, the league’s last unbeaten team, in Week 8. Quarterback Jared Goff played every snap, handling constant pressure from a Vikings blitz that occurred on nearly 90% of defensive plays.

Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and Sione Vaki combined for 182 rushing yards, with Gibbs gaining 116 yards on 12 carries in the second half and Vaki adding 36 yards on six carries. Their performance gave the Lions two viable options in the backfield.

Wide receivers Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown led the passing attack, while tight ends Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright saw increased usage in a three-tight-end formation that helped counter the Vikings’ aggressive blitz scheme. The Lions employed this personnel set 16 times, achieving a 73.7% success rate, according to The Athletic.

The offensive line played the entire game except for center Cade Mays, who left with an ankle injury. Center Juice Scruggs stepped in and helped sustain the run game after the substitution.

On defense, the interior line remained stable, but edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson missed several snaps due to a concussion, prompting rookie Derrick Moore to assume a larger role. Linebacker Jack Campbell exited with a neck injury, and Jimmy Rolder left with a hamstring issue, forcing the unit to rotate players such as Trevor Nowaske and Malcolm Rodriguez more heavily.

Cornerback D.J. Reed was sidelined by a hip injury, while Roger McCreary and Ya-Sin saw increased snaps. Safety Chuck Clark played every defensive snap after Brian Branch left with a concussion, allowing Keith Abney to re-enter the rotation.

Special teams kicker Jake Bates missed his first kick of the season, but the team managed without significant impact.
