Val Chmerkovskiy returns to DWTS after suspension, receives praise from judge

Summary

Professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy resumed his partnership with Jenna Dewan on "Dancing with the Stars" after a one-week suspension, and judge Carrie Ann Inaba complimented his choreography during the Halloween-themed episode.

Val Chmerkovskiy rejoined celebrity partner Jenna Dewan for the "Dancing with the Stars" Halloween-themed episode on October 27, after serving a one-week suspension for a social-media post that referenced a 2022 Oscars incident. The post, which was later deleted, was intended to defend his wife, fellow professional dancer Jenna Johnson, but producers said it conflicted with the show’s standards.

During rehearsals, Chmerkovskiy apologized to Dewan, saying he regretted the disruption. Dewan accepted the apology and the pair performed an Argentine-tango inspired by zombie movies.

The judges responded positively, and Inaba began her feedback with a specific compliment: "Incredible choreography, Val."

She added that the dance was "perfection" and awarded the couple a score of nine.

After the live broadcast, Inaba and Chmerkovskiy embraced on stage, acknowledging their professional relationship. Inaba later explained on Instagram that she had not commented earlier out of professional courtesy and offered to discuss the lift rule that had been part of the original dispute.

During Chmerkovskiy’s absence, Dewan performed with returning professional Alan Bersten, delivering a Viennese waltz in tribute to her mother.
