California health officials urge flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccinations ahead of holidays

The California Department of Public Health reminded residents to receive flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines, noting they can be administered together and are widely available.

The California Department of Public Health issued a reminder on Thursday urging residents to get vaccinated against influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as the holiday season approaches. The agency said the three vaccines are now available and covered for most people at local pharmacies and health-care providers.

The department recommends flu shots for anyone six months of age and older, especially those at higher risk of severe illness. The latest COVID-19 vaccine is advised for children 6-23 months, pregnant individuals and adults 65 years or older. RSV vaccination is suggested for infants and toddlers, adults 75 years or older and pregnant people.

"As we head into the holiday season, vaccination provides protection," said Dr. Erica Pan, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer. "COVID-19, flu and RSV can cause serious illness, particularly for infants, older adults and people with certain health conditions."

CDPH notes that the vaccines are safe to receive at the same time and provides a list of risk factors on its Public Health for All webpage. Appointments can be scheduled online or by contacting a local pharmacy or health-care provider.
