Drone strike kills two and injures 17 in Voronezh, separate freight train derailment in Sverdlovsk region
A drone attack in Voronezh resulted in two deaths and 17 injuries, while a freight train derailment in Sverdlovsk region caused fires but no casualties.
Two men, aged 60 and 53, were killed and 17 people were injured, including a child, after a drone attack in Voronezh, regional governor Alexander Gusev said. Several of the wounded were reported to be in serious condition. Debris from the drones fell onto a train traveling through the city’s left-bank suburbs, prompting emergency responders to attend the scene.
The governor added that the strike ignited fires at multiple sites, including a business centre, an apartment block, two dacha settlements, a school stadium and a garage cooperative, though the industrial fires did not cause major damage. Building facades and windows were damaged across most districts of the city.
Gusev claimed that air-defence forces shot down more than 70 drones over Voronezh and intercepted 113 across the wider metropolitan area, but these numbers have not been independently confirmed. Neither the Russian defence ministry nor Ukrainian officials have commented on the incident.
In a separate incident, 20 freight-train cars derailed in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region, with seven fuel tankers catching fire. No casualties were reported. The Sverdlovsk Railway halted traffic on the Reshety-Aramil section to allow firefighting and recovery trains to clear the area. Residents nearby reported flames, thick black smoke and an explosion that illuminated the vicinity of the Chusovsky Tract. The consumer-rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said it would test air quality in surrounding residential zones.
The derailment follows a series of reported disruptions to Russian railway infrastructure in recent months, including earlier drone-related incidents in the Bryansk region that caused railcars to derail.
