Thunder guard Jalen Williams faces season-ending surgery after fractured leg and dislocated ankle
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams will undergo surgery for a broken left fibula and a dislocated ankle, while forward Cason Wallace also requires surgery for a labral tear, likely sidelining both for the remainder of the season.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams has been diagnosed with a broken left fibula and a dislocated left ankle and will undergo surgery, the team announced on Monday. General manager Sam Presti said there is no timetable for Williams’ return until after the operation and indicated it is likely he will miss the rest of the season.
The Thunder also revealed that forward Cason Wallace needs surgery to repair a left labral tear sustained in the team’s 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Recovery for Wallace is expected to take several months, according to typical rehabilitation timelines.
"There isn’t a timetable for Williams’ return and one won’t be set until after the surgery," Presti said at a news conference.
"Dub, as everybody knows, is as tough as they come. He’s an elite competitor. Even last night, just miraculous in terms of his outlook and the way he’s looking forward to attacking this. We’re going to be with him the entire way," Presti added.
"Tough night last night. There’s no way to paint that differently. We say within our walls all the time there’s a difference between being positive and being optimistic. Not going to sit up here and say this is exactly where we want to be or this is how we’d like to have it, but at the same time, we’re extremely optimistic about the recovery for both the players. Most importantly, things could have been a lot worse," he said.
Williams, a 2024-25 All-Defensive team selection who averaged 17.9 points over his first five seasons and helped the Thunder win the 2025 NBA championship, was injured with 1:14 remaining in the fourth quarter against the Clippers. The injury prompted a five-minute game stoppage as medical staff attended to him. Wallace, also an All-Defensive team member last season, suffered his injury in the same game.
The Thunder have dealt with multiple significant injuries in recent years, including Chet Holmgren’s missed rookie season and Nikola Topić’s limited availability due to an ACL tear and cancer treatment. Presti acknowledged the cumulative impact of these setbacks but said roster-spot decisions can wait.
"I haven’t thought about anything related to the roster spot," Presti said.
