U.S. Marine Indicted in Okinawa for Murder and Robbery
Japanese prosecutors have charged Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard with robbery and murder in connection with the death of a Japanese woman in Naha, Okinawa.
Japanese prosecutors have formally indicted Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, a U.S. Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, on charges of robbery and murder. The indictment relates to the killing of 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha earlier this month, where investigators say the victim was strangled with a telephone cord and a backpack containing her wallet was taken.
Ballard has denied the allegations. The Naha District Public Prosecutors’ Office provided details to public broadcaster NHK, though the office was unavailable for comment outside regular business hours.
The incident has prompted public demonstrations in Okinawa and Tokyo, and led local authorities to impose a curfew and an alcohol ban for U.S. service members on the island. The III Marine Expeditionary Force issued a statement acknowledging the indictment and pledging cooperation with Japanese authorities.
"We recognize the seriousness of the charges and will continue to cooperate fully with Japanese authorities in their ongoing investigation as the legal process moves forward," the force said.
