NC State and athletic director Boo Corrigan announce separation from head coach Dave Doeren after 14 seasons
NC State confirmed the termination of Dave Doeren as head football coach, appointing Todd Goebbel as interim head coach, while speculation arises about former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers as a possible replacement.
NC State announced Wednesday that it has ended its 14-year partnership with head football coach Dave Doeren. Athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement, "I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride. I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, Sara and his family the best in the future."
Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel will assume the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Doeren compiled a record of 98 wins during his tenure, with the Wolfpack posting winning seasons in 11 of his 14 years in Raleigh. The 2026 campaign began with a 35-31 loss to Vanderbilt, followed by a 31-28 defeat by Stanford.
Media reports indicate that Alabama native Philip Rivers, currently head coach at St. Michael and former NC State player, is being discussed as a candidate for the permanent position. Rivers’ son, Gunner, recently committed to NC State as a recruit for the upcoming season.
Doeren’s departure leaves two Power Five head-coaching vacancies, joining Maryland, which dismissed Mike Locksley earlier in the week.
