Protesters breach Rome's Colosseum as Italy faces nationwide unrest
The New York Post reported that hundreds of demonstrators forced their way into Rome’s Colosseum on 25 October, and police used force to remove them as thousands marched in cities across Italy over the cost-of-living crisis and the war in Gaza. Reuters said police deployed tear gas in Milan and a water cannon in Bologna, causing injuries and arrests. Fox News quoted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemning the violence and urging opponents to denounce the unrest. BBC noted that Meloni convened an emergency security meeting after more than 200 arrests in Milan.
The New York Post also described how Father Giannigola Maria Simone gestured at rioters and sheltered tourists inside his church. PBS reported that thousands marched in Milan, Rome and Turin while authorities deployed thousands of police and additional soldiers to prevent a repeat of the previous week’s violence. The New York Post added that demonstrations spread to France, Albania, Belgium, Italy and Spain, prompting police deployments and arrests.
