Eagles add quarterback Joe Milton after Jalen Hurts sidelined by blood clot

Summary

Philadelphia signed former Cowboys practice-squad quarterback Joe Milton to its 53-man roster as Jalen Hurts is ruled out with a blood clot, prompting Tanner McKee to start in Week 6.

Philadelphia announced the signing of quarterback Joe Milton to its active roster following Jalen Hurts' diagnosis of a superficial blood clot that will keep him out of at least one game. Milton, a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft who spent the first five weeks of the season on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad, joins the Eagles after appearing in four games for Dallas in 2025.

Hurts' condition was first identified by ultrasound during the team's Saturday walkthrough before their London game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. A subsequent scan on Wednesday showed movement in the clot, leading the team to rule him out for the Week 6 matchup with the Carolina Panthers while treatment plans are finalized.

With Hurts unavailable, backup Tanner McKee is slated to make his third career start on Sunday. The Eagles released Andy Dalton on Oct. 9, leaving Cole Payton, a fifth-round 2026 draft pick, as the only other quarterback on the roster before Milton's addition. Payton, who recorded 5-of-12 for 47 yards and a touchdown in three preseason games, is expected to serve as the No. 2 quarterback for the upcoming contest.

Milton, who was drafted by the New England Patriots and played one game as a rookie before being traded to Dallas in April 2025, posted 15-of-24 for 183 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in his four appearances for the Cowboys last season. Depending on the length of Hurts' recovery, Milton could assume a larger backup role as he familiarizes himself with Philadelphia's offensive system.
