Paramount’s ‘Street Fighter’ Film Faces Fan Backlash as Director Defends Goofy Tone
Director Kitao Sakurai defended the goofy, comedic tone of Paramount’s live-action ‘Street Fighter’ film, saying it was intentional and matched the studio’s vision, after fans staged walkouts and voiced criticism during early screenings in Los Angeles on 21 October. The film, which blends actors such as Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and Jason Momoa with WWE and UFC athletes, premiered in Los Angeles on 12 October and opened nationwide on 16 October.
Early viewers offered mixed impressions, praising the fight choreography but noting uneven editing and a fragmented plot. In its opening weekend the movie earned about $50 million worldwide – $31 million domestically and $20 million overseas – prompting analysts to question the prospects of a sequel.
