Committee warns of 22% Social Security cuts without reform
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget warned in Woodlawn, Maryland, that without legislative action Social Security could need to cut benefits by as much as 22% by 2032. The Social Security Administration announced on October 14 that the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment would be 3. 6%, increasing average retirement payments by roughly $75 a month for more than 72 million beneficiaries. The announcement also raised the taxable earnings ceiling to $192,300 and adjusted earnings limits for retirees.
Earlier analysts had projected the COLA to be between 3. 4% and 3. 6%.
