Netflix's "La Bola Negra" Gains Oscar Buzz After Cannes and Toronto Success

"La Bola Negra," a Spanish-language Netflix film directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, has attracted awards attention following strong festival showings and a limited theatrical run.

Netflix’s Spanish-language drama "La Bola Negra" is being positioned as a leading Oscar contender after a standing-ovation at Cannes, a shared best director award, and a People’s Choice win at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, directed by the duo known as Los Javis, follows three gay men in Spain across 1932, 1937 and 2017, intertwining personal love stories with the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath.

Lead actors Guitarricadelafuente and Miguel Bernardeau, both 29, describe their on-screen chemistry as natural. > "It wasn’t hard to fall in love with him," Bernardeau said of his co-star. The pair noted that balancing the film’s intense romance with its historical setting required careful modulation of emotion.

The production received military training for authenticity, and veteran director Pedro Almodóvar, a producer on the film, questioned whether Guitarricadelafuente could convey a convincing soldier. The actors also worked with intimacy coordinators and relied on close collaboration with the directors to stage the film’s explicit scenes.

"La Bola Negra" premiered at Cannes earlier this year, earning a 20-minute standing ovation and a best director prize for Los Javis. It later won the People’s Choice Award at Toronto, becoming the first non-English-language film to do so since 2011. Netflix will release the movie in theaters for 47 days starting Oct. 16 before its streaming debut.

The film’s themes of queer love and historical oppression have drawn comparisons to earlier Oscar-winning LGBTQ+ titles such as "Moonlight" and "Brokeback Mountain." While Bernardeau does not identify as queer, Guitarricadelafuente is openly gay, joining a growing roster of out actors portraying gay characters in the awards season.

Los Javis, who previously created the acclaimed series "Veneno," see the film as both an artistic statement and a potential catalyst for broader acceptance of queer narratives. > "There’s no better way to get people to understand things than art and movies," Calvo said. The directors hope the film’s success will demonstrate the commercial and cultural viability of LGBTQ+ stories on a global platform.
