Netflix's Spanish Queer Epic 'La Bola Negra' Emerges as Oscar Contender
The Netflix-distributed Spanish film 'La Bola Negra' is gaining awards momentum and could challenge Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' for Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards.
Netflix is positioning its Spanish-language film "La Bola Negra" as a serious contender for the Best Picture Oscar, aiming to secure the award after a lengthy theatrical run of 47 days before its streaming debut. The movie, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, intertwines three narratives set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and contemporary Spain, exploring themes of queer identity and historical memory.
Industry observers note the contrast between "La Bola Negra," a low-budget subtitled drama made for under $17 million, and Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," a high-budget epic that has been identified as a leading favorite for multiple Oscar categories. Variety's chief awards editor Clayton Davis suggested the Spanish film could earn a nomination, while former Vanity Fair critic Richard Lawson placed it among the frontrunners.
The film premiered at Cannes, where it shared the Best Director award and received a 20-minute standing ovation. It has since won audience awards at the San Sebastián and Toronto International Film Festivals, the latter of which has historically been a strong indicator of Oscar success.
"I think they feel that this is as close as they’ve gotten to Best Picture, kind of maybe ever," said Kyle Buchanan, a former awards columnist for the New York Times.
"Most people came out of that flush with excitement, faces red with tears, and just the feeling of, ‘Oh, finally. This is the movie of the festival…’" recalled Buchanan about the Cannes screening.
The film also serves as Spain’s official entry for the International Feature category and may become the first foreign-language picture since "Parasite" to win the top prize. Supporting performances by Penélope Cruz and newcomer Guitarricadelafuente are expected to be considered in the supporting actor categories.
Analysts continue to list other high-profile releases, such as Nolan’s "The Odyssey," as well as upcoming titles like "Dune: Part Three" and "Wild Horse Nine," among the likely Best Picture nominees. While "The Odyssey" remains the favorite, "La Bola Negra" is projected to secure multiple nominations and potentially win in several categories.
