Fresno ICE officer charged with multiple felonies after assaulting homeowner and daughter
On October 14, a Fresno County district attorney indicted off-duty ICE officer David Gonzalez III on multiple felony counts, including assault, elder abuse, vandalism and battery, for an incident that occurred on October 9 in central Fresno, California. The indictment follows the earlier confrontation in which the officer, found sleeping on a homeowner’s lawn, allegedly attacked the 72-year-old homeowner and the homeowner’s daughter, handcuffed them and was subsequently shot by the homeowner; the shooter faces no charges. The incident sparked local calls for a suspension of ICE operations in Fresno.
The October 9 assault was first reported by local authorities who said the homeowner intervened after the officer’s aggressive behavior. Police said the homeowner’s use of a firearm was deemed justified and that the officer was taken into custody after being wounded. Earlier coverage by regional news outlets described the officer’s alleged assault and the subsequent shooting, providing the factual basis for the later criminal charges.
