Tropical Storm Rachel Causes Coastal Flooding and Record Rain in Southern California and Nevada
The Guardian reported that intense waves and flooding from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel damaged homes and infrastructure along the Southern California coast, and that heavy rain set a record in Las Vegas. Earlier forecasts from the Sacramento Bee and Weather West warned that the storm, with near-70 mph winds, could make landfall near Tijuana and bring rain and gusty winds to San Diego and Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Times noted that a tropical-storm watch was issued for the region, prompting evacuations of oceanfront homes in Long Beach and the closure of beaches and piers in Newport Beach.
The storm made landfall in northern Baja California as a post-tropical system, bringing high tides and flood risks that kept coastal flooding advisories in effect through early next week, according to later Los Angeles Times reporting. NBC 7 San Diego said the tropical-storm watch for San Diego County was lifted, but officials warned that flooding and strong surf could persist.
