ICE agents accused of failing to identify themselves before Manhattan shooting
On October 14, a federal court filing by Oscar Belgal’s attorneys alleged that ICE agents failed to identify themselves and used excessive force during an October 8 encounter in Marble Hill, Manhattan. The filing says Belgal was shot in the neck while his five-year-old son was unharmed. The shooting was captured on NYPD body-camera footage released by the department and sparked condemnation from city officials; Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for a review of ICE and police actions.
Earlier reports described the incident as a traffic stop in the Bronx that escalated into a gunfire exchange, injuring Belgal and two ICE agents. ICE and DHS defended the use of force, saying the agents acted in self-defense.
