Ukrainian drone attacks cripple Yandex services across Russia
Ukrainian drones struck three Yandex data centres on 17 October, causing widespread outages that disrupted online payments, navigation, ride-hailing and other digital services across Russia and neighboring countries, CNN reported. The attacks followed a series of strikes that began on 3 October when a drone hit the Sasovo centre in Ryazan Oblast, igniting a fire and halting operations, Meduza said. A second strike hit Yandex’s Kaluga centre, partially disabling it, Reuters reported.
By early October Yandex said it was working round the clock to restore services after two of its five centres were damaged, according to the BBC. Analysts later found no evidence that the attacks had reduced Kremlin-linked disinformation bots, the BBC added.
