Michael Douglas memoir details career, family challenges and cancer battle

Actor Michael Douglas, 82, released a memoir titled One Helluva Ride that chronicles his decades-long career in film, his personal relationships and his recent health battle. The book recounts his early work producing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the decision to replace his father Kirk Douglas in that project, and his subsequent rise as a producer and leading actor.

Douglas describes his marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones, past affairs with co-stars such as Kathleen Turner, and the impact of his son Cameron’s conviction for drug-smuggling, which resulted in a seven-year prison term. He also reflects on his own struggles with substance use and his treatment for stage-4 oral cancer, noting that he initially described the diagnosis as throat cancer to limit speculation about potential disfigurement.

"People say to me: Michael Douglas. When I see your name, I don’t know what I’m going to get, but I know it’s going to be good," Douglas said in a recent interview.

The memoir includes anecdotes about on-set conflicts, including a physical altercation with director Paul Verhoeven during Basic Instinct, and his experience portraying Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, a role that earned him an Academy Award. He also comments on the evolving perception of 1960s cultural values, suggesting a renewed interest in community and cooperation.

Co-author Shane Salerno assisted Douglas throughout the writing process, particularly during his chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The book aims to provide insight into the film industry while also serving as a personal reflection on a life lived in the public eye.
