Google restricts free AI plans and launches Gemini 4 Argon for premium users
Google rolled out the Gemini 4 Argon model in Mountain View, California, on 13 October, making it available only to subscribers of its AI Pro and AI Ultra plans and offering developers discounted API rates through November. The rollout followed a series of changes announced on 9 October, when Google said free-tier users would be limited to the Flash-Lite model and the Gemini Pro model would be removed from the low-cost AI Plus subscription, which now requires a $4.
99 fee for the standard Flash model. At the same time the company introduced an automatic “Auto” model setting for free users and added three new effort levels that let all users choose response depth.
