Panthers face cornerback shortage against Lions after injuries

Summary

Carolina may be without both starting cornerbacks for Sunday night’s game with Detroit after injuries to Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, prompting concerns over the secondary’s ability to handle the Lions’ passing attack.

The Detroit Lions entered Week 4 as three-point favorites over the Carolina Panthers, but the odds shifted after the Panthers suffered injuries to their top cornerbacks. Starting right cornerback Jaycee Horn was ruled out indefinitely following a quad injury sustained on Sunday against the Browns. Horn, a two-time Pro Bowler who signed a four-year, $100 million extension last offseason, had allowed only five receptions on ten targets for 63 yards and two pass breakups before the injury, according to Pro Football Focus.

In the same game, the Panthers also lost left cornerback Mike Jackson to a groin injury. Jackson, an eight-year veteran who previously spent a brief stint with Detroit in 2019, has been a key playmaker, recording an NFL-high 19 passes defended and four interceptions in 2025. His status remains uncertain as he did not return after the first-half injury.

With both starters sidelined, Carolina’s secondary will rely on rookie Will Lee III, Akayleb Evans, nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade, and three practice-squad players—undrafted rookie DeVonta Smith, Zion Childress, and Corey Thornton, the latter having appeared in 12 games last season. The Panthers are expected to adjust the depth chart as they prepare to face a Lions passing offense that ranks eighth in yards per game, third in passer rating, and tied for second in touchdowns.

"We’ll have to get creative with our personnel and trust the guys stepping up," a Panthers spokesperson said. The injury situation could influence betting lines and the game’s outcome as Detroit looks to exploit the weakened cornerback group.
