AISI chief says $15 bn Iowa steel plant will boost U.S. output and exports
On 28 September, the chief executive of the American Iron and Steel Institute said the $15 billion steel plant in Iowa will raise U. S. steel production and create new export opportunities, citing the project’s backing by President Trump’s tariff policy.
President Donald Trump announced the plant earlier in September, describing it as a facility that could produce between 7 million and 10 million tons of steel each year and provide about 1,750 permanent jobs, with iron-ore mining to be sourced from Minnesota’s Mesabi Range. The project is being led by India’s Essar Group, whose energy subsidiary Nayara Energy has partial Russian ownership that is subject to EU sanctions.
