Retired Colonel Urges Congressional Moratorium on AI Data Centers
Retired Air Force Colonel Drew Miller, author of a report for the Collapse Survival Institute, urged Congress to halt construction of new artificial-intelligence data centers and to require safety safeguards, warning that rogue AI systems could target nearby communities. The call follows a wave of warnings from AI experts who have long cautioned that advanced models pose existential threats.
Earlier this year, Anthropic’s IPO prospectus disclosed that its models might develop self-preserving behavior, and OpenAI chief Sam Altman argued that some AI harms must be tolerated for the technology’s benefits. Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon also testified before the New York City Council that leading labs are seeking to automate research and called for greater transparency and a slower development pace.
