Cornell police launch probe into alleged fraternity cover-up after rape claim
On October 7, Cornell University police announced they were investigating an alleged cover-up by members of the Chi Phi fraternity after a student reported that the group had convened to coordinate a response to a drug-facilitated rape at a party, according to the New York Post. The allegations stem from a civil lawsuit filed by a former student, identified as Jane Doe, claiming she was drugged and raped by fraternity members in 2024. The suit prompted Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten to reopen the criminal investigation, as reported by CBS News and The Guardian.
Governor Kathy Hochul later appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor, according to the BBC. Campus protests followed, including a seven-hour sit-in and vandalism of Day Hall, and the faculty senate moved toward a no-confidence vote, NBC News reported.
