Glover Teixeira says Raoni Barcelos suffered brain swelling after UFC loss
Glover Teixeira said that Raoni Barcelos suffered brain swelling and a possible traumatic brain injury after losing consciousness in the fifth round of his UFC Vegas 121 bout in Las Vegas on September 26, as reported on October 2. Barcelos was taken to a Level 1 trauma center after the fight and his coach said he was alert, responsive and undergoing standard medical tests.
The UFC later confirmed he was stable, and Barcelos himself said he was recovering and hoped to return to competition. Former UFC fighter Matt Brown warned that serious injuries could occur in the octagon while praising the organization’s medical protocols following Barcelos’s removal from the bout.
