Russian airstrikes kill at least seven in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities

Resumen

Russian attacks on Kyiv and other locations in Ukraine on Monday killed at least seven people and injured more than 50, while Ukrainian forces reported limited territorial gains.

At least seven people were killed and more than 50 injured after a series of Russian strikes hit Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on Monday, officials said. The attacks damaged apartment blocks, offices, data centers and the National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district, where a woman was among those killed. Russian drones also struck a pharmaceutical plant, gas stations in the capital, an office centre in Dnipro, a nine-storey apartment block in Kharkiv and residential areas in the Chernihiv region.

Ukraine's defence ministry reported that Russian forces hit two data centres in Kyiv, several gas stations, a postal-service hub in Odesa and two cargo ships in the Black Sea, actions it said were intended to disrupt grain exports. The Russian defence ministry claimed its troops captured villages in the Donetsk and Sumy regions, though the statements could not be independently verified.

In Kyiv, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the prospects for rapid progress in peace talks were slim, adding that Ukraine would “pay a price” for recent actions. Earlier, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov told the United Nations that Europe was hindering peace negotiations.

Ukraine’s Third Army Corps announced it had reclaimed about 68 square miles since launching the Operation Vivaldi offensive earlier this year, citing the use of modified armoured vehicles and ground robots. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said long-range strikes hit defence plants and oil facilities in Russia’s Tula, Voronezh and Krasnodar regions, while Russian officials reported shooting down 254 Ukrainian drones overnight.
