Pennsylvania reports fifth measles death as outbreak tops 900 cases
Pennsylvania health officials said a 20-year-year-old Amish woman undergoing leukemia treatment died of measles-related complications, marking the state's fifth death as the outbreak surpassed 900 cases. Earlier, the Pennsylvania Department of Health had reported the outbreak reaching 903 cases and 176 hospitalizations, with four deaths already confirmed.
State and county health workers had been conducting door-to-door vaccinations and pop-up clinics in Amish communities, while doctors warned that hospitals were straining under the surge of cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted a second measles death nationwide, and federal data showed the United States approaching 3,700 cases this year.
