Democrats optimistic, Republicans splurge cash as US midterms enter final month
The United States entered the final month before the November 3 midterm elections with Democrats optimistic about winning both the House and the Senate while Republicans poured record spending into key races, Al Jazeera reported. Earlier in October, internal GOP polls highlighted President Donald Trump’s approval slipping to about 32 percent, prompting House Republicans to reassess campaign spending, CNN said. Trump also launched a rally tour across red-state strongholds, USA Today noted.
Republicans had hoped to use redistricting advantages to flip Democratic seats, but low approval and historic midterm trends tempered expectations, another CNN report added. The National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund allocated tens of millions to contests in Iowa, Ohio, Alaska, North Carolina and Texas, the New York Post reported. Candidates also adjusted strategies in response to rising diesel prices and the Iran conflict, Slate said, while the Guardian observed that Democrats led generic-ballot polls and GOP fundraising outpaced that of the Democrats.
