Hurricane Nolo remains Category 4 southwest of Hawaii, surf warnings issued
Hurricane Nolo remained a Category 4 storm over 400 miles southwest of Honolulu on 28 September, with winds near 155 mph, prompting surf and small-craft advisories as forecasts showed it turning northward away from the islands, local officials said. The system originated as Tropical Depression Fifteen-E on 23 September, with the Weather Channel forecasting it would become Hurricane Nolo and approach the Hawaiian Islands. The National Hurricane Center later projected it would reach major-hurricane strength, leading to tropical storm watches, flood warnings and statewide school closures.
By 26 September the storm had stalled south of the Big Island as a Category 2 cyclone, and forecasters warned of up to 25 inches of rain and dangerous coastal waves. Subsequent reports noted that residents were experiencing storm fatigue after previous hurricanes, and emergency officials continued to monitor the storm as it intensified toward Category 4.
