Micron forecasts RAM shortage through 2028 as AI demand soars
Micron and Samsung executives said on 2 October in upstate New York, United States, that the global shortage of RAM is expected to persist through 2028, with AI-focused memory demand outstripping supply and pushing up prices, according to Ars Technica. The outlook follows Micron chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra’s remarks on the fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call on 30 September that memory and storage availability would become significantly tighter in 2027 and 2028 than in 2026, according to TechPowerUp. The company also warned, as reported by The Register, that demand for DRAM and high-bandwidth memory would outpace supply through 2028 while it posted a sharp rise in revenue and margins.
Analysts noted that Micron is set to become the leading contributor to S&P 500 earnings growth in the upcoming quarter, per MarketWatch, and that its operating income is expected to exceed that of the so-called Magnificent Seven, according to Yahoo Finance. Options-market data showed a modest 7% post-earnings move and a predominantly bullish bias among traders, CNBC reported.
