Nor'easter weakens but continues to cause coastal flooding, power outages and flight disruptions in the Northeast
A slow-moving nor'easter is weakening as it moves offshore, yet high tides, strong winds and heavy rain are still producing flooding, power outages and extensive airline delays across the Mid-Atlantic and New England.
The nor'easter that moved ashore along the New Jersey coast is gradually weakening and is expected to drift away from the region tonight, but onshore winds and high tides are still driving water inland. Coastal flooding remains a concern through Monday’s high-tide cycles, especially in back bays and low-lying roads of the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England.
"Flooding is still likely at high-tide times today," said FOX Weather hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross, noting that floodwaters will begin to drain as winds subside later in the day.
Rainfall totals have topped six inches in parts of Massachusetts, while other areas of southern New England report three to four inches, raising the risk of urban flooding and rising streams.
Power outages have surged past 100,000 customers, with more than 40,000 in New York, over 31,000 in Connecticut and nearly 20,000 in New Jersey without electricity as wind-torn trees and downed lines impede restoration crews.
Aviation operations are severely affected: the Federal Aviation Administration extended a ground stop at LaGuardia Airport until at least 11:00 a.m. ET, and Boston Logan International Airport is experiencing hundreds of delays and cancellations. LaGuardia alone logged over 170 delays this morning, while Logan reported 132 delays and 192 cancellations.
Additional weather-related disruptions include a bird strike at Newark Liberty International Airport and a search for a missing man at Robert Moses State Park after he entered rough surf.
Officials continue to advise residents to keep vehicles on higher ground, avoid flooded roads, and check flight statuses before traveling.
