Cubs Say Third Baseman Alex Bregman Will Remain Active Despite Facial Fractures

Summary

Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that third baseman Alex Bregman will not be placed on the injured list after sustaining multiple facial fractures, and the player is expected to miss only a few games.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters that third baseman Alex Bregman will stay on the active roster despite suffering multiple facial fractures and significant swelling. The injuries occurred on Sunday when a foul ball struck Bregman in the face during an at-bat by Michael Busch, resulting in a bloody nose and bruising. Medical testing confirmed several fractures, but Counsell said they are not severe enough to warrant an injured-list placement.

Bregman completed a light workout and tracked pitches on a Trajekt machine on Tuesday, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune. The team expects him to miss only a handful of games, with Pedro Ramírez and Matt Shaw slated to fill in at third base in the interim; Ramírez is scheduled to start the upcoming game.

The Cubs have six regular-season games remaining and are tied with the San Diego Padres for the second Wild Card position, one game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. The team has not yet clinched a playoff berth, and the Wild Card round is set to begin on Tuesday.
