Cubs' Alex Bregman Hospitalized After Foul Ball Injury
Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was taken to the hospital after being struck in the face by a foul ball during a win over the Reds, where he had contributed an RBI single and a walk.
Chicago third baseman Alex Bregman left the game early after a foul ball hit him in the face while he was in the on-deck circle during the Cubs' 9-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Bregman, who had opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and later drawn a walk, was escorted from the field by an athletic trainer and taken to a hospital for further testing.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Bregman sustained a cut under his left eye, minor nose bleeding and noticeable swelling. The injury occurred in the fourth inning when Reds right-hander Luis Mey was pitching and Michael Busch was at the plate.
Matt Shaw pinch-hit for Bregman, and Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a two-run home run that helped secure the win. Starter David Peterson threw six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out seven.
Bregman, a three-time All-Star who signed a five-year, $175 million contract with Chicago in January, remains listed as injured. The Cubs could clinch a playoff spot later Sunday if the Arizona Diamondbacks lose to the New York Yankees.
