Hannah-Jones says enrolling daughter failed to help school and harmed child
Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote in a recent essay that her decision to enroll her four-year-old daughter in the under-performing PS 307 Urban Assembly Unison school in Brooklyn did not improve the school and harmed the child. She had previously said she regretted the choice, noting that her daughter did not receive the education she wanted and urging more focus on families lacking school-choice options.
Hannah-Jones also explained that she placed her daughter in the under-resourced school to push for systemic change, but now acknowledges the child fell academically behind. Her husband, Faraji Hannah-Jones, defended the decision, describing it as a purposeful stand against racism and likening his wife to historic civil-rights figures.
