Katmai National Park Expands Fat Bear Week to Include Bear Families
On 23 September, Katmai National Park and Preserve announced that its Fat Bear Week bracket had been expanded to include whole bear families, highlighting the effort of mother bears and drawing a record number of online voters. Park officials had earlier increased the competition to 16 brown bears on 22 September, citing a surge in cub numbers and a new generation preparing for hibernation. The park also launched online voting that allows the public to select the bear that gained the most weight over the summer.
CBS News reported that voting runs from 22 September through 29 September, with defending champion Chunk among the contenders. NBC News noted that Chunk is seeking a back-to-back title against rivals such as Gully.
