Attorney General defends White House media ban as privilege, not right
Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the Trump administration’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, saying that press access is a privilege, not a right, according to a statement reported on 27 September. President Donald Trump announced the ban on 18 September, accusing the outlets of false reporting. The White House then confiscated the journalists’ press passes and the three organizations filed federal lawsuits alleging First Amendment violations.
A federal judge later ordered the temporary reinstatement of the credentials, finding the ban likely violated due-process rights. The administration has continued to justify the restriction on national-security grounds.
