German Chancellor Merz Vows to Stay in Office After Historic CDU Election Losses
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's approval fell as the CDU performed poorly in recent state elections, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) continued to gain support, according to BBC reporting. Earlier exit polls had shown the AfD leading with roughly 38% of the vote in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the CDU slipping to about 5%, causing the party to miss the 5% threshold and lose representation in that state and in Berlin.
Merz responded by pledging to remain in office and to push ahead with his tax- and welfare-reform agenda, a stance he reiterated in statements after the defeats. Prior to the votes, eight CDU state premiers issued a joint statement endorsing Merz and calling for a stable federal government.
